Hiring from the Homelands &
Intergenerational Indigenous Leadership
All of SPI’s Advisory Board are California Indian, and a majority of our staff are California Indian. Members of staff and board come from Acjachemem, Cahuilla, Chumash, Hupa, Payóm Kawichum Luiseño, Tongva, Purepecha, and Diné tribes. Our board members are some of the most well-respected cultural experts in California, and our collective team consists of cultural practitioners, legal professionals, professors, activists, and artists who bring multifaceted, diverse perspectives to our work. We believe in the importance of ‘hiring from the homelands,’ and ensuring that trusted, respected members of our staff/boards’ respective communities are at the forefront of SPI’s work.
Our team members come to SPI with established track records and have amassed over a century’s worth of experience working with their own and other tribal communities: Currently, our oldest board member is in her 80’s while our youngest staff member is 21 years old— a rare composition for any organization, but especially rare within the environmental movement.
